Hazzan Javier Smolarz came to the Merrick Jewish Centre in August, 2016. He was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina where he attended a Jewish day school until he began his university studies. He was always drawn to the cantorate, even while attending medical school at the University of Buenos Aires. Hazzan Smolarz received his cantorial training in Argentina under the direction of a number of reknown Argentinian cantors. He has also had experience teaching b'nai mitzvah students. In addition, he had opportunities to lead High Holiday services and to serve as the Hazzan at Congregation Or El in Buenos Aires. While pursuing his medical degree he also found some time to continue both his Jewish studies and his musical studies. Hazzan Smolarz received his medical degree in 1992 and then pursued a Medical Residency in Pediatrics.
The economic downturn in Argentina brought him to the United States where he filled the cantorial position at Congregation Ahavath Shalom in Fort Worth, Texas from 2004 until 2010. At that time he and his wife Dina moved to Mexico City, the place where she was born and has her family. While in Mexico, he worked as a physician in a public hospital and served as the Hazzan and spiritual leader at Beth Israel Community Center, a small conservative synagogue.
Hazzan Smolarz and Dina are the proud parents of a beautiful daughter, Galia. They are excited about becoming part of our community and Hazzan Smolarz looks forward to enhancing the ruach of our services by bringing us some of his Latin American Jewish style.
