PJ Library: A Parent’s Perspective
My five-year-old daughter lights up when I show her the large, white and blue envelope from the mailbox. Curls bouncing, she bounds toward me to open the surprise immediately. What’s inside? A PJ Library book or CD. Every single month. And it’s free.
PJ Library is one of the most exciting, forward-looking and generous programs in our community. Sponsored nationally by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, PJ Library is simply a gift. Each month, enrolled children (one child per household) between the ages of six months and eight years, receive a free book or CD. But, true to its commitment to providing innovative programs for young Jewish families, the Merrick Jewish Centre doesn’t stop there. Our synagogue has created fresh, dynamic programs to accompany the monthly free books and music.
The PJ Library team has organized several pre-Shabbat programs that have featured activities including story time in the sukkah, a popular children’s magician, decorating flower pots for Tu B’Shevat, playing Purim-themed bingo and creating edible Israel-themed treats for Yom Ha’Atzmaut. Together, children and their parents and grandparents also say prayers over Shabbat candles, challah and grape juice. New smiling faces of all ages come to the events, which this year leads to a free summer and carnival themed Family Fun Day.
The Merrick Jewish Centre isn’t just sending books to strangers. And it isn’t just developing thoughtful, creative programs that families can enjoy together. It is using PJ Library as a starting point to create positive first Jewish experiences and in the process, a stronger Jewish community.

Who is eligible for PJ Library at the MJC?
Any family that lives in Merrick or the surrounding communities that has a child between six months and eight years old is eligible to register for PJ Library. The Merrick Jewish Centre offers one subscription per family. Families with multiple children are recommended to sign up the oldest child and use the trickle-down method, signing up the next child as each child turns eight.
We look forward to new families joining and taking advantage of this unique opportunity. Sign up for PJ Library by clicking here.

~ Once Upon A Shabbat
One Friday a month during the school year, from 5:30 pm to 6:15 pm, the Merrick Jewish Centre’s PJ Library team offers fun and innovative Jewish programming for the community. Once Upon A Shabbat includes Shabbat songs and PJ Library stories followed by an activity and kosher, nut-free snacks.
~ Free Family Fun Day
This annual event takes place on a Sunday in May or June, and ranges from concerts for kids to an indoor carnival.
~ Indoor Summer Movie Nights
During the summer, cool down with PJ Library each month for an indoor movie night. We invite families to bring their children dressed in pajamas and bring blankets, sleeping bags and/or beach chairs for a fun movie, and kosher, nut-free snacks.
