Rabbi Ravid Tilles has served as a spiritual leader at the Merrick Jewish Centre since 2013. He was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City where he also received a Masters Degree in General Studies and a Certificate in Pastoral Care. Before entering rabbinical school, he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelors Degree in Arts and Social Work, as well as a Certificate in Judaic Studies. Rabbi Tilles grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland and was very active in his local Jewish community. As a teenager, he became involved with United Synagogue Youth (USY), ultimately becoming President of the Seaboard Region, which taught him leadership skills that still inform his rabbinate. He and his wife Yaffa were married in 2009 and have two children: Avishai (born 2012) and Micah (born 2015).
Though the Merrick Jewish Centre is Rabbi Tilles’ first full time pulpit since graduation, he previously served a number of communities throughout his time at the Seminary. He worked as a Youth Director and USY advisor at Temple Beth Sholom in Roslyn, New York, as well as the rabbinic intern at the Pelham Jewish Center in Pelham, New York. Along with Yaffa, from 2011-2013 he fulfilled the role of Jewish Life Director for List College, the undergraduate school at JTS. Rabbi Tilles was a Legacy Heritage Rabbinic Fellow, during which time he served as the rabbi at Congregation Beth Israel in Flint, Michigan. He also participated in the Schusterman Rabbinical Fellowship program. Rabbi Tilles is committed to strengthening the MJC and the greater Jewish community with inspirational and engaging programs, as well as being a reliable presence at important moments in the lives of congregants.
