When you join Merrick Jewish Centre you automatically become part of Congregation Ohr Torah, a warm and caring community, which offers many opportunities for social involvement and doing good deeds. The nexus for acts of loving kindness at MJC is the Chesed Committee, which meets periodically on Monday nights and Wednesday afternoons (dates listed below). We reach out to members of our congregation who are going through difficult times through our sub-committees:
- Bikur Cholim (visiting the sick)
- Family Support Services
- Social Work
Chesed also has a sub-committee for Mitzvah Drives and Projects. It spearheads our work in the larger community and has been instrumental in keeping the Alix Rubinger Kosher Food Pantry open, supporting the Mid-Island Y JCC’s collections, and in providing a monthly meal to the food pantry in Freeport. In addition, it is responsible for food, gift and clothing drives during the Chanukah and Passover holidays.
Our committee has provided several CPR/AED sessions and regularly replaces aging parts in the Merrick Jewish Centre's defibrillators.
Our newest venture is joining the Rock and Wrap It Up! organization in their mission to recover prepared and other perishable food. If you have food you can donate after a holiday, home party or catered affair you can call the Rosa Parks Inn at 516-546-3076 to arrange delivery. If you have excess food after shiva or need help delivering, contact us at [email protected]
Are you looking for opportunities to give back to your community? Please call us or simply attend a meeting. No particular amount of time is required and all are welcome.
If you have been experiencing some of life’s difficulties, speak to us about how we can be of assistance or let Rabbi Klein or Rabbi Tilles know that you would welcome our call.
